Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Professional Organizer?

According to the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO), "A Professional Organizer enhances the lives of clients by designing systems and processes using organizing principles and through transferring organizing skills."

How do you become a Professional Organizer?

As of April 2007, the Board of Certification for Professional Organizers instituted the Certified Professional Organizer ® exam. In order to sit for the exam, participants must qualify with a variety of previous experience (see www.certifiedprofessionalorganizer.com). There are numerous courses available both independently and through NAPO. Books, seminars and work experience are also available in the field.

Why should I hire a Professional Organizer?

A Professional Organizer can provide an objective view of your space. The solutions created for you and your space will be easy to use, allowing you to enjoy and relax in that space. An organizing professional will help you make decisions about your belongings that allow you to efficiently use your space and time.

Do I have to be there while my space is being organized?

Not necessarily. Although it is preferred if you are there to help make decisions during the organizing process, some parts of the organizing process can be done while you are absent.

I'm embarrassed about my space. Should I clean up before the appointment?

No! In order for the organizer to accurately understand how you are currently using your space, she will want to see it as-is.

How long will getting organized take?

It depends. There are many factors involved in the length of an organizing project. These include how much space will be worked on, how many belongings there are to organize, and what speed you and the organizer feel comfortable working at.

How much will this cost?

Prices vary by length of projects. Projects are charged in hourly increments.

What if I need organizing products?

Your organizer will be happy to work with you to find whatever organizing products will best suit your needs. She can either help create a list of those items for you to purchase or may be able to purchase them for you.

Will I be forced to get rid of items?

Not at all! Although purging of items is part of the organizing process, it does not mean that you will be forced to get rid of items you love, need or want. It is suggested that you eliminate items that will no longer enhance your life and your space.

What if the disorganization comes back after the organizer leaves?

The organizer will create systems you can use and maintain throughout. In the event that disorganization comes back into your life, the organizer will be happy to return and 'touch-up' your space, making adjustments where needed.
