How to Organize When You're Sick

This past month or so I've known people who were sick with just about all the things that go around come winter. Everything falls by the wayside when you don't feel well.

First thing's first: Prioritize. What do you really need to get done during those few days you're sick? There's definitely some communicating with others that needs to happen. In order to respond in a timely manner, defer to email. Reschedule appointments as much as possible to save energy and prevent others from catching anything you could spread.

Secondly, get better! Nap when you're exhausted; Take the medicine the doctor tells you to take; Take a hot shower. It sounds pretty simple, really, but most of us ignore this part while we're sick. Keep the medicine out on the counter so you remember to take it. Keep tissues and cough drops with it, so you always know where to find them. (You may even want to move things to your nightstand each night, though).

And, of course, try not to become completely isolated from the world. So, when you have the wherewithal to do so, check your email and voicemail; Watch the news (if you can bear to); watch a few reels - but not too many. Remind yourself to get groceries or do the laundry.

How exactly is this organizing? Think of it like a vacation - a snotty, sad vacation. You have to get the right supplies and keep them handy. You have to be aware of your time and the activities you should be getting done (vs. the activities you're actually getting done - sleeping and blowing your nose!). It's easy to get sidetracked on vacation - and when you're sick. Your schedule's different, and your energy is different.

The only things being sick and vacation have in common? Lots of snacks. Lots of sleep. That is, of course, if you're doing it right.

Stay healthy out there!
